WALKING BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT: TRUSTING GOD WHEN YOU CANNOT SEE THE WAY

WALKING BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT

WALKING BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT: TRUSTING GOD WHEN YOU CANNOT SEE THE WAY

Faith is one of the foundational principles of the Christian life. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals men and women who trusted God even when they could not see the outcome. Their confidence was not based on circumstances but on the character and promises of God.

The Apostle Paul reminds believers:

"For we walk by faith, not by sight."
2 Corinthians 5:7

This simple yet profound verse teaches us that our lives should be directed by God's Word rather than by what our physical eyes can see. In a world filled with uncertainty, fear, and changing circumstances, God calls His people to trust Him completely.

Walking by faith does not mean ignoring reality; it means believing that God is faithful even when we cannot understand His plan. Faith gives us confidence to obey God, persevere through trials, and remain hopeful because we know that He is working all things together for our good.

1. What Does It Mean to Walk by Faith?

Walking by faith means living in daily dependence on God and His promises rather than relying solely on our feelings, circumstances, or human understanding.

Faith is confidence in God's character. Even when answers are delayed, faith believes that God remains good, faithful, and sovereign.

The writer of Hebrews defines faith:

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Hebrews 11:1

Faith gives substance to hope because it rests on God's promises rather than visible proof.

Walking by faith means:

  • Trusting God's timing.
  • Obeying His Word.
  • Believing His promises.
  • Following His leading, even when the destination is unclear.

Abraham is a powerful example. God called him to leave his homeland without revealing all the details of the journey.

"By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called... not knowing where he was going."
Hebrews 11:8

His obedience was based on trust, not complete understanding.

2. Why Walking by Faith Is Essential

Many believers experience seasons where they cannot see how God will provide, heal, restore, or open doors. In those moments, faith becomes essential.

Walking by faith:

  • Strengthens our relationship with God.
  • Produces spiritual maturity.
  • Brings peace during uncertainty.
  • Helps us persevere through trials.
  • Glorifies God through obedience.

James writes:

"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience."
James 1:2–3

Trials are not evidence that God has abandoned us. Often, they are opportunities for our faith to grow stronger.

3. Faith Overcomes Fear

Fear focuses on problems, but faith focuses on God's power.

When the disciples faced a violent storm, they feared for their lives. Jesus spoke peace to the wind and the waves, showing that He has authority over every situation.

"Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?"
Matthew 8:26

The presence of Jesus was greater than the storm.

Likewise, when we keep our eyes on Christ instead of our circumstances, we find the courage to move forward.

4. Faith in the Lives of Bible Heroes

The Bible is filled with examples of men and women who trusted God even when circumstances seemed impossible.

Noah Walked by Faith

God instructed Noah to build an ark before rain had ever fallen upon the earth. Although people mocked him, Noah obeyed because he trusted God's Word.

"By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household."
Hebrews 11:7

Noah's obedience reminds us that faith often requires action before we see results.

Moses Walked by Faith

Moses chose to obey God rather than enjoy the temporary pleasures of Egypt.

"By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible."
Hebrews 11:27

Faith enabled Moses to persevere because his focus was on God rather than Pharaoh.

David Walked by Faith

When David faced Goliath, everyone else saw an unbeatable giant. David saw an opportunity for God to display His power.

"The battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hands."
1 Samuel 17:47

Faith does not deny the size of the problem—it recognizes that God is greater than every problem.

Peter Walked on Water by Faith

Peter stepped out of the boat because Jesus called him.

"And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus."
Matthew 14:29

As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked by faith. When he focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink.

The lesson is clear: faith grows stronger when our eyes remain fixed on Christ.

5. Obstacles That Can Weaken Our Faith

Every believer faces challenges that can test their faith.

Some common obstacles include:

Fear

Fear exaggerates problems and causes us to forget God's promises.

Doubt

Doubt questions God's ability or willingness to act.

Impatience

Waiting can be difficult, but God's timing is always perfect.

Sin

Unconfessed sin affects our fellowship with God and can weaken our spiritual confidence.

Negative Influences

The voices we listen to can either strengthen or weaken our faith. Surround yourself with people who encourage you to trust God.

6. How to Strengthen Your Faith

Faith grows as we intentionally pursue God.

Read the Word of God Daily

The Bible is the primary source of spiritual growth.

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
Romans 10:17

Reading Scripture consistently renews our minds and reminds us of God's promises.

Pray Continually

Prayer deepens our relationship with God and strengthens our trust in Him.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."
Philippians 4:6

Prayer shifts our focus from our problems to God's power.

Remember God's Faithfulness

Reflect on the times God has answered your prayers, provided for your needs, and carried you through difficult seasons.

Remembering His faithfulness builds confidence for future challenges.

Obey God Even When It Is Difficult

Faith becomes stronger through obedience.

Each step of obedience prepares us for greater responsibilities in God's Kingdom.

Jesus said:

"If you love Me, keep My commandments."
John 14:15

7. God's Promises Strengthen Our Faith

The Bible contains countless promises that encourage believers to trust God.

  • God Will Never Leave You

"I will never leave you nor forsake you."
Hebrews 13:5

  • God Works All Things for Good

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."
Romans 8:28

  • God Gives Peace

"You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You."
Isaiah 26:3

These promises remind us that God's faithfulness is greater than our circumstances.

8. Faith Pleases God

Faith is not only beneficial to believers—it is pleasing to God.

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."
Hebrews 11:6

God delights in hearts that trust Him completely.

Faith declares:

  • God is trustworthy.
  • God's Word is true.
  • God's timing is perfect.
  • God's promises never fail.

9. Jesus Christ: The Author and Finisher of Our Faith

Our greatest example of faith is Jesus Christ.

The writer of Hebrews encourages believers:

"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith..."
Hebrews 12:2

Jesus endured suffering, rejection, and the Cross because He trusted the Father's plan.

When we keep our eyes on Christ, our faith is strengthened, and we find the courage to persevere through every season.

Conclusion

Walking by faith is not about pretending difficulties do not exist. It is about trusting God in the midst of those difficulties. Faith believes that God's promises are true even when circumstances suggest otherwise.

Like Abraham, Noah, Moses, David, and Peter, we are called to trust God's Word above what we can see with our natural eyes.

Every challenge becomes an opportunity to grow in faith. Every act of obedience strengthens our relationship with God. Every answered prayer reminds us that He is faithful.

As you continue your journey with Christ, remember:

"For we walk by faith, not by sight."
2 Corinthians 5:7

May your life be marked by unwavering trust in the God who never fails.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling me to walk by faith and not by sight. Help me to trust You even when I cannot see the way ahead. Strengthen my heart when fear and doubt arise, and remind me that Your promises are always true.

Teach me to depend on Your Word, seek You in prayer, and obey Your voice with confidence. Increase my faith so that I may glorify You in every season of life.

Thank You for being faithful, loving, and unchanging. I place my future, my family, my work, and every concern into Your hands. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray.

Amen.
